The scenes-of-crime officer is a terminal photographer; the worst photographer ("least virtuous ... most cruel or unkind" OED). This specialist in detail is an image-maker who is called upon only to photograph scenes of carnage and destruction. The professional arrives at the given location enveloped in the familiar protective clothing--single-use one-piece coverall, respirator, nitrile gloves, etc. Their appearance, at any place, has become an index for the most grisly and harrowing aspects of human behavior: if the men-and-women in anti-contamination apparel have arrived and set up their tripods, that is ominous--and indicative of a wretched scene of desolation beyond.
